U Prep Scholar Athletes Soar to Victory:

Detroit, MI — This sports season, scholar athletes at University Prep Schools (U Prep) demonstrated exceptional prowess both on the court and in the classroom, bringing home numerous championships and individual awards. In basketball, the UPA Panthers and UPAD Mustangs secured District Championships in their divisions, with the Panthers clinching an additional regional championship.

Meanwhile, the UPAD Varsity Girls proudly claimed the Silver Division title in the highly competitive Charter School Conference, showcasing their exceptional skill and teamwork. Simultaneously, the UPAD Middle School Girls celebrated a triumphant victory as they were crowned Detroit PAL City champs, demonstrating their dedication and prowess on the court.

Over at UPSM Middle School, the Cobras demonstrated their strength and resilience by securing a commendable runner-up finish in the Boys Championship of the fiercely contested Detroit PAL league, highlighting their determination and competitive spirit.

In the realm of cheerleading, both the UPA High Panthers Varsity Cheer team and the UPSM Varsity Cheer team soared to success. The Panthers clinched 1st Place in the prestigious Metro Detroit Cheer Competition, while UPSM Varsity Cheer made an indelible mark with an impressive 3rd place finish, showcasing their talent and dedication on the mat. in the same competition. Additionally, both UPA Middle and UPA Mark Murray teams secured first place in their respective divisions in the Detroit PAL league.

Individual excellence shone brightly with Andre Harlan receiving the prestigious MHSFCA Regional Coach of the Year award. Xander Wedlow and Dimaunye Smith-Powe of UPA High varsity basketball both earned 2nd Team MHSAA All-State honors, while Brandon Spears of UPAD High received recognition as a Detroit News All-Metro selection.

In girls' basketball, Alanna Neves of UPA High was honored as the Charter School Player of the Year. In volleyball, Gabriel Black of UPSM High was recognized with a 1st Team selection in the All Charter School Conference, with several others from the U Prep network earning Honorable Mention.

Academically, U Prep Schools excelled with 13 selections to the All-Academic team in volleyball, six each for boys and girls basketball. UPSM district led with six scholars in basketball, showcasing their dedication. “Our scholar athletes' journey embodies the transformative power of athletics," remarked Brittany Foote, Assistant Athletic Director for U Prep Schools.
