As we prepare for the upcoming school year, we want to inform our U Prep Schools community about an important update to our school policy regarding cell phone usage.

New Cell Phone Policy Effective August 26, 2024

Starting August 26, 2024, scholars in grades 6 through 12 will no longer be permitted to use cell phones during the school day. This decision is based on a growing body of research highlighting the negative impact of excessive cell phone use on teenagers' mental health and academic performance. Our observations align with these findings, particularly regarding scholars' ability to focus in class, manage social interactions within the social media environment, and handle conflicts in a healthy manner.

Research on Cell Phone Usage and Teen Mental Health

Numerous studies have shown that high levels of cell phone use among teenagers are linked to increased anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep patterns. The constant access to social media and texting can contribute to stress and feelings of social isolation. We aim to create an environment that fosters focus, learning, and overall well-being by limiting cell phone use during school hours.

For those interested in the research behind this policy change, we recommend the following studies:

Access to Phones at Dismissal

We understand the importance of communication between scholars and their families. Scholars will have full access to their phones at dismissal, allowing them to reconnect with you as needed.

Emergency Communication

In case of an emergency, our school has a robust communication system to ensure parents are informed promptly and accurately. Please make sure your contact information (email, phone number, emergency contacts) is up to date so that you receive timely updates.

More Details Coming Soon

In the days leading up to the start of school, you will receive more information from your child’s school principal about what to expect on campus as we implement this change. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s school.

We are confident that this new policy will lead to a more focused, engaged, and healthy student body, positively contributing to our scholars' mental health and academic success. We appreciate your support and understanding as we implement this change.
