Strategy. Patience. Dominance.

There is a specific kind of focus required to win a state championship. It’s about thinking three moves ahead while the clock is ticking and the pressure is mounting.

The UPSM Middle School Chess Team doesn't just play the game—they dominate it. After winning the State Chess Championship (Under 600 Section), our scholars were recently invited to be recognized by the Detroit City Council and Councilwoman Mary Waters

Meet the Champions:

  • Lawrence Harris (Gold Medal Winner)
  • Isaiah Cobb
  • Tristan Galloway
  • Kenneth Lewis

Behind every great team is a strategy. Coaches Dominic Johnson and Ravin McCormick have cultivated a culture of brilliance and patience, proving that the brightest minds in the state are right here in our hallways.

To see our scholars standing in the City Council chambers being honored for their intellectual achievements is a proud moment for the entire U Prep family. The trophy is in the building, but the legacy is just beginning.
