University Prep Academy High School – Ed Parks Campus has been awarded a $75,000 Pathway to Possibilities grant from the Detroit Children’s Fund to create a student-inspired Makerspace STEM Lab in the school library. The space will feature 3D printing, hands-on AI experiences, augmented reality development, podcasting, digital storytelling, music production, and digital art and animation—designed to amplify scholar creativity and prepare future-ready leaders.

University Prep Academy Middle School proudly welcomes a new leadership team: Principal Kyra White, formerly leading at UPA’s Ellen Thompson Elementary Campus, and Assistant Principal Michael Foster, who served last year as Assistant Principal at UPA Mark Murray and is also a proud U Prep graduate. Together, their leadership reflects a powerful full-circle moment as U Prep Schools celebrates 25 years of empowering Detroit scholars.

Throughout February, U Prep Schools celebrated Black History Month with engaging, student-led events across all campuses—honoring the past, celebrating the present, and inspiring the future. From tech conferences and talent showcases to wax museums and cultural fests, each school highlighted the impact of Black excellence while empowering scholars to see themselves as part of that ongoing legacy.

U PREP’S is GREENING Detroit with Project-Based Learning

UPA High's Urban Forest and Culture class, led by Ms. Quick, collaborates with Michigan State University to reforest Detroit. Through hands-on project-based learning, students read "Racist Roots," design reforestation plans, and plant trees in local neighborhoods. This initiative fosters environmental stewardship and community engagement, supported by the National Council of Teachers of English.

Young Author’s Bilingual Coloring Book Series Promotes Creativity and Language Learning

Adeliss Frias, a UPA Ellen Thompson scholar, launched an eight-book series, Addie's World Bilingual Children's Coloring Series. This vibrant, interactive collection blends Spanish and English to make language learning fun and creative for children. Available on Amazon, it celebrates bilingualism and cultural diversity.
